A Legacy of Danish Motorcycle Craftsmanship

Nimbus is an iconic Danish motorcycle brand produced by Fisker & Nielsen from 1919 to 1959. While the company was originally known for its Nilfisk vacuum cleaners, it expanded into motorcycle production, introducing innovative models that were ahead of their time. Nimbus motorcycles are celebrated for their unique engineering, durability, and historical significance, making them highly sought after by collectors today.

The First Generation: Nimbus Model A and B (1919-1928)

The first Nimbus motorcycle, introduced in 1919, was often called the “Stovepipe” due to its thick, cylindrical frame tube, which also served as the fuel tank. It featured a 746cc four-cylinder inline engine with shaft drive, an advanced feature for its time. However, despite its technical superiority, commercial success was limited, and production ceased in 1928.

The Second Generation: Nimbus Model C (1934-1959)

Nimbus made a comeback in 1934 with the Model C, also known as the “Bumblebee” (Humlebien) due to its distinctive engine sound. This model was powered by a 746cc air-cooled four-cylinder inline engine with an overhead camshaft, producing 18-22 horsepower. It featured a pressed-steel frame and a telescopic front fork, which was a groundbreaking innovation at the time.

Thanks to its reliability, the Nimbus Model C became widely used by the Danish postal service, police, and military. With a top speed of around 120 km/h, it was a versatile motorcycle for both government agencies and private riders.

Nimbus Motorcycles Today

Nimbus motorcycles are still highly valued among collectors, with many restored examples still on the road today. In Denmark, over 4,000 registered Nimbus motorcycles remain in use, a testament to their build quality and timeless appeal. Spare parts are still available, allowing owners to restore and maintain these unique machines.

The Modern Revival of Nimbus

In recent years, there have been attempts to revive the Nimbus brand with modern technology. One project involves an electric version of the Nimbus, inspired by its classic design but featuring a modern electric motor. This reflects the brand’s lasting impact and continued relevance in the motorcycle world.
