DKW Motorcycles: Pioneering Two-Stroke Engineering

Founded in 1916 by Danish engineer Jørgen Skafte Rasmussen in Zschopau, Germany, DKW (Dampf-Kraft-Wagen) began its journey producing steam fittings. The company soon shifted focus to internal combustion engines, leading to the development of motorcycles that would leave a lasting impact on the industry.

Origins and Evolution

In 1919, DKW introduced a two-stroke toy engine named “Des Knaben Wunsch” (“The Boy’s Wish”). This innovation laid the foundation for their first motorcycle in 1922, which featured a 118cc engine mounted on a bicycle frame, aptly named “Das Kleine Wunder” (“The Little Wonder”). By the late 1920s, DKW had become the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, a testament to their engineering prowess and popular designs.

Iconic Models

One of DKW’s most influential models was the RT 125, introduced before World War II. Its simple yet effective design made it a favorite among riders and manufacturers alike. The RT 125’s engineering was so impactful that its design was adopted by several manufacturers post-war, including Harley-Davidson’s Hummer and BSA’s Bantam.

Another notable model was the DKW ULD 250, a racing motorcycle powered by a rotary-valve engine. In 1938, rider Ewald Kluge secured a historic victory at the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, marking the first win for a non-British motorcycle in the event’s 30-year history.

Legacy and Influence

DKW’s innovative two-stroke technology and motorcycle designs have left an enduring legacy in the motorcycling world. Their engineering principles influenced numerous post-war motorcycles, and their commitment to performance set new standards in the industry. Today, DKW motorcycles are cherished by collectors and enthusiasts for their historical significance and engineering excellence.
