Founded in 1920 as a subsidiary of Deutsche Industrie-Werke AG, D-Rad began its journey under the brand names Star and Derad. By 1923, the company consolidated its identity under the D-Rad marque, focusing on producing motorcycles that combined reliability with performance. The company’s manufacturing facility was located in Berlin-Spandau, a hub for industrial innovation during that era. 

Notable Models

Throughout its operational years, D-Rad introduced several models that left a lasting impact on the motorcycling community:

  • R0/4: Launched in the mid-1920s, this model featured a 500cc single-cylinder engine, delivering approximately 8 horsepower. Its sturdy construction made it a favorite among riders seeking durability and efficiency. 
  • R0/6: An evolution of its predecessors, the R0/6 offered enhanced performance and became popular for both solo and sidecar applications. Its versatility showcased D-Rad’s commitment to meeting diverse rider needs.
  • R10: Introduced in 1931, the R10 was equipped with a 496cc single-cylinder overhead valve (OHV) engine, reflecting the company’s dedication to advancing motorcycle technology. 

Legacy and Influence

Despite ceasing production in 1933 following a merger with NSU Motorenwerke, D-Rad’s influence in the motorcycle industry remains noteworthy. The brand produced approximately 60,000 motorcycles during its operational years, contributing significantly to Germany’s motorcycling heritage. Today, D-Rad motorcycles are cherished by collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate their historical significance and engineering excellence.
